A tidy little house on the canal with a real kitchen and nothing to fuss over

River House is the easy one. It's the most affordable of our houses with a proper kitchen, and everything about it is clean, bright and simple — no big styling statement, just a well-kept house you can settle into and forget about.

You come in through a gate in a terracotta-red wall with "River House" hand-painted on it. The front of the house is a covered open-air lounge with red floorboards, a grey L-shaped sofa, a striped hammock and bamboo blinds you can roll down against the sun. The kitchen runs along one side — gas hob, fridge, sink, white louvre cupboards, pots and pans on a rail — everything you need to actually cook, with a round table and carved chairs for dinner.

The bedroom is a good size and airy, with a few framed prints above the bed and an open wardrobe rail. The bathroom is the freshest of our more affordable houses — white tile, a band of patterned feature tile, and a walk-in rain shower. A small seasonal canal runs alongside; in the rainy months you'll hear it, the rest of the year it's quiet.

Good to know

A 2.5-minute walk (180m) from the beach on a flat path, then four steps up to the house.

  • House size: about 37 m², plus a garden
  • Every drop in the house is mountain spring water — shower, sink and all. The kitchen also has a filtered tap that's safe to drink
  • Fan-cooled, no air-conditioning
  • Full kitchen: hob, fridge, sink, cookware, kettle, water filter; no oven
  • A seasonal canal runs beside the house — flowing in the rains, dry otherwise
  • Hot water, safe, soap & shampoo; free WiFi on request (AIS best signal)

Everyone checks in at the restaurant, and our team carries your bags up to the house from there.
