Haad Tien is one of the most remote bays on Koh Phangan. There's a road in over the hills — Google Maps will show it — but it's a homemade single-lane 4×4 track, not a road you should drive yourself (more on that below). The last stretch is meant to come in by boat from Haad Rin, or by 4×4 taxi with a driver who knows the track. It's part of why the bay stays quiet. We sit in the gardens just behind the beach, so however you arrive you'll land on Haad Tien beach and walk the last few minutes up to us — and if you're staying with us, message when you land and our staff will carry your bags up from the sand.
The part that surprises people
Most of our guests are already on Koh Phangan, coming over from the other side of the island. From the south end near Haad Rin there are two real ways into the bay — plus a direct boat from Samui if you're skipping the island crossing.
Go to Haad Rin main beach — the same beach the Full Moon Party is held on, not the ferry pier — and find a longtail taxi-boat driver. It's about 10–15 minutes along the coast to Haad Tien. The fare can be a little unpredictable: the captain has the final say, and when the boat isn't full they'll often charge more to make the run worth it. So a quote above the going rate usually just means few passengers, not a scam — and waiting for the boat to fill is the cheapest way across.
The option to take when the sea's rough. 4×4 taxis run the off-road track in from the Ban Tai 7-Eleven — there are several 7-Elevens in Ban Tai, so use the map pin to find the right one. It starts per person and goes up if the truck doesn't fill; drivers like to leave with eight to ten passengers, so a small group may pay more per head or wait for others. Genuinely bumpy, no proper road — but it always gets through.
If you're skipping the island crossing entirely: JS Speed Boat run straight from Samui onto Haad Tien beach — no Haad Rin taxi, no final longtail. The shared service is around 900฿ per person; private charters carry up to 7 (single engine) or up to 20 (three engine) and include Samui Airport pickup.
No. This is the one piece of advice on this page we'd ask you to take seriously. Google Maps shows a road, and there is one — but it isn't built for visitors. It's a homemade track the local businesses laid themselves: less than half is concrete, and the concrete that exists is single-lane, poured only over the worst stretches where cars used to slide in the rains. The rest is rough terrain, loose sand and very steep hills.
The danger isn't only the surface — it's a one-lane road on a mountain. Coming up a steep climb you'll meet vehicles coming down the same lane, with nowhere obvious to pull aside. Supply trucks can't reverse back down, so they have right of way, and yielding to them is tricky even for experienced drivers. Add the sand and the gradient and brakes can fail. Every week in peak season there are motorbike accidents on this hill, and in the worst cases people die.
So please don't attempt it on a rented scooter or car. Take a taxi truck or a taxi boat — the drivers do this run every day and know exactly how to handle the track.
Only weather stops the boats — when the sea's big they don't run, and that's the whole bay, not one cautious operator. In good conditions you can almost always find one, because the captains wait down on the beach. There are fewer after dark, so daytime is easiest, though weekend party nights (Saturday and Sunday) run late.
If it looks rough, take the 4×4. And use your own judgment even when boats are running — if the waves look genuinely big, you're well within your rights to go by truck instead. A quick tip when the weather's turned: the Eden and Bambu party pages often post that night telling people to come by 4×4, which tells you how the bay's leaning.
