Around the bay

Things to do around Haad Tien

Haad Tien, Koh Phangan is a small, slow bay — and that's the point of it. There's no strip of shops or tour desks out here; most of what you "do" is the sea, the jungle and a handful of good places to eat, all within a short walk of your house.

Here's an honest guide to how to fill your days: swimming and the water, the walks and viewpoints, somewhere to find yoga or a massage, and where to eat your way around the three bays — ours and our neighbours'.

On the water: swimming, snorkeling and e-foiling around Haad Tien

Swimming the three bays

Where to actually get in — and the platform

Haad Tien is a beautiful, magical bay, but it's mostly reef — so the swimming here is really the corner where the Sanctuary tucks in. The treat is the floating platform out in the middle of the bay: swim out, climb up and lie in the hammock. For easy, open water, walk to the neighbours — Haad Yuan is the longest beach, white sand and the easiest swimming of all; Haad Wai Nam is the small, intimate one. Both net off jellyfish in season.

Where: the Sanctuary corner of Haad Tien and the floating platform; Haad Yuan and Haad Wai Nam, each a 10–15 min walk.

Snorkeling the reef

Coral and fish straight off the beach

What makes Haad Tien tricky for swimming makes it lovely for snorkeling: most of the bay is living reef, so you hardly have to swim out. Pull on a mask straight off the beach and there's coral and reef fish in the shallows — a good slow hour. Float over it rather than standing on it, it's living coral. The headlands and the reef over at Haad Wai Nam are worth a look too.

Where: straight off the beach at Haad Tien; also the headlands and Haad Wai Nam.

E-foil lessons

Fly above the water on a hydrofoil
Bookable

The one genuinely active thing on the water here. E-foiling — riding an electric hydrofoil board that lifts you up out of the water and glides almost silently — is run by the owner of Canopy Village up the hill, who teaches it himself. Gear comes down to the bay, sessions for beginners to advanced, and you don't need to be staying at Canopy.

Booking: through Canopy Village — open to non-guests.

Walks and viewpoints around Haad Tien, Koh Phangan

The Haad Rin jungle trek

The big walk over the headland
Half day

A jungle trail links Haad Rin — where the Full Moon Party happens — over the headland to Haad Tien, with a viewpoint on the Haad Yuan side that looks back over both bays. The first stretch is a steep, sweaty climb; after that it levels into proper jungle with streams and birdsong. Reckon on an hour and a half to two and a half hours.

Before you go: real shoes, water and bug spray. Start in the cooler morning; take a taxi boat back from Haad Rin if you'd rather not walk both ways.
Trailhead: the stairs by the Sanctuary restaurant, following the markers toward Haad Yuan and Haad Rin.

Bay-to-bay coastal walks

Short hops between the three bays
10–15 min

You don't need the big trek to get a walk in. The short paths over the headlands between Haad Tien, Haad Yuan and Haad Wai Nam take ten to fifteen minutes each, through trees and over rocks — how you'll get to lunch, a swim or a yoga class on the next beach along. Easy, shaded and worth doing just for the views into the coves.

Where: headland paths linking all three bays, both directions from Haad Tien.

The Ridge & Haad Tien viewpoint

A short climb for sunrise or sunset

Above Haad Tien, a path climbs the ridge to a lookout over the bay and out to sea — a shorter, sharper climb than the full trek, and a good one for sunrise or late afternoon when the light is soft and the heat has dropped. The quiet alternative if you want the view without the half-day.

Where: the ridge above Haad Tien — ask us for the path up.

Yoga, wellness and massage on Haad Tien

The Sanctuary

Drop-in yoga at the bay's landmark
Haad Tien

The landmark that put Haad Tien on the map — a wellness retreat running since 1989. Daily drop-in yoga and meditation in an open-air jungle shala, plus detox programs, a healing centre and a beachfront health-food kitchen. Most of it is open to non-guests. Its spa is the Tea Temple, in the gardens just below our hill-top houses.

Where: the south end of Haad Tien — a few minutes' walk.

Canopy Village

A jungle float tank & studio
Bookable

An off-grid, solar-powered jungle retreat on the hill between Haad Tien and Haad Wai Nam, built by an island music producer. Two draws are open to non-guests: a professional recording studio, and a sensory-deprivation float tank (the R.E.S.T. Pyramid) where you float weightless in body-temperature saltwater, in complete dark and quiet. Worth it for the curious.

Booking: float tank, studio and e-foil all bookable without staying there.

A massage

Spa-grade or local-and-cheap
Two options

Two honest choices at opposite ends of the scale. For polished and spa-grade, the Sanctuary's Tea Temple, in the gardens just below our houses — book there and you're booking with the Sanctuary. For local and cheaper, Love Lip along the beach is a budget Thai restaurant, massage and bungalow spot all in one — unfussy, friendly, the kind of place you end up at more than once.

Where: Tea Temple (Sanctuary spa) and Love Lip, both on Haad Tien.

WhyNam yoga

A cliffside platform over the water
Haad Wai Nam

Over at Haad Wai Nam, the vegan beach kitchen (also written Why Nam or Wai Nam) has a cliffside yoga platform on the southern edge of the bay, with a teacher often in residence. A pretty, quiet spot to practise over the water — and a lovely walk to get there.

Where: Haad Wai Nam, a 10–15 min walk over the headland.

A few honest notes

Good to know

Almost everything here runs on the bay's own quiet rhythm. Bring cash — there are no ATMs out on Haad Tien, and a few of the smaller places are cash-only (at Spice we take both card and cash). Most of the walking happens in flip-flops, but the proper treks want real shoes. Hours and classes shift with the season and the weather, and in the deepest low season some places wind down, so it's always worth asking us at the restaurant what's actually running while you're here — we'll know.

Heading further afield in the evening? Our nights out guide covers the bay's parties, and the getting here guide has the boats and the 4×4 in full.
