The Haad Rin Taxi Boat: Real Prices, Times and Rough-Sea Rules

Every guest who reaches the southeast bays of Koh Phangan — Haad Tien, Haad Yuan, Haad Wai Nam — comes by longtail boat or over a jungle track. There's no road in, which is why the bays are what they are. Our family rides this route weekly, so here are the real numbers and the real rules, current as of this season.

Where the boats actually leave from

The taxi boats work from Haad Rin's main beach — the party beach, not the ferry pier. Walk out onto the sand and the captains are there; they've worked that beach for generations. You don't book ahead. You show up, agree the fare and go when the boat fills.

What it costs

Around 300฿ a person when the boat fills, for the 10–15 minute run to Haad Tien or Haad Yuan. Leaving part-empty or chartering the whole boat costs more, and night crossings run wavier and pricier — especially on weekends and party dates, when boats work through the night. Daylight crossings are calmer and cheaper, so aim to reach Haad Rin by late afternoon.

Boats take cash only. There's no ATM in the bays — get cash in Haad Rin or Ban Tai first. If you land short once you're here, the minimart on Haad Tien does card cash withdrawal for a fee.

When the sea says no

The captains read the water better than any forecast, and when the waves say stop, they stop. That's not a failure of the system — it is the system. The fallback always works: a 4×4 from the Ban Tai 7-Eleven over the jungle track, around 500฿ a person when it fills, or about 3,000฿ private. Bumpy, 20 minutes, gets through in any weather.

One warning we give everyone: don't drive that track yourself. It's a homemade single-lane route, steep and less than half concrete, and rented scooters come off it badly every week in peak season. Take the truck.

Coming straight from Samui

In the main seasons (roughly December to April, and July to August), JS Speed Boat runs directly from Koh Samui to the sand at Haad Tien — around 900฿ shared, or private charters from 7,500฿ including airport pickup. It turns a three-leg journey into one boat. Rough December seas occasionally divert it to Ban Tai, where the 4×4 finishes the job.

Arriving with luggage or kids

The boats handle bags fine — they're loaded and unloaded over the bow, so pack things you can pass hand to hand and keep electronics in something splash-proof. With children, take the daylight boat: calmer water, easier boarding and the ride becomes the adventure instead of the ordeal. Staying with us?
